Away!

I'll be in LV for the next week (competing, see here for info, and there'll even be a live webcast of the final here) then Skiing for the week after. If you want to reach me (for some strange reason) I should be checking phone / email occasionally, but apologies in advance for any delays. I'm taking a camera (odd for me, I know) so hopefully will have some pictures to put here later. Adios, until then.

Amazing news in from Microsoft: That's right, a P2P chat application with NO code written by the user at all. I was struck by two thoughts - (a) Is Microsoft just telling a big fib, and (b) is it a good thing that P2P apps can be written with no code? Having recently downloaded the NetBeans 6.1 Beta IDE to help with some Java GUI, I decided to test this out...so channeling the reviewing style of Jeremy Clarkson and simile generation of Zero Punctuation , welcome to my first ever IDE roadtest: Can NetBeans create a code-less P2P app? For those who hadn't heard, Blogger recently launched the feature I'd been working on for the last few months - threaded commenting:  http://buzz.blogger.com/2012/01/engage-with-your-readers-through.html This post is mostly just a call to everyone reading to comment more on blogs - Blog authors like it when they get (non-spam) comments, and commenters get to engage with the author and hopefully discuss with someone who shares an interest. More on this later, but first I have to say, a big thankyou to our users; for both their patience in getting this feature, and the positive reaction to it. What do I mean by the latter? Sounds good - part 1

I've spent a bit of time recently on one particular coding project of mine: Go-Sound , which is a library for sound manipulation and analysis written in Golang. When explaining it to people however, it turns out that not many people know how sounds work - indeed, I didn't until recently - which is interesting as it's something we use all the time (statistically, you're probably hearing something while reading this) but don't really know much about. This post is an introduction to the library, but also hopefully serves as a tutorial about what sound actually is. Sound = changing pressure When you hear a sound, what are you actually sensing? Sound waves are actually changes in pressure that are picked up by your eardrum.
